I really want students to ask lots of questions. I won't have an answer for everything, but I will do my best. You can ask questions by either commenting on the posts or sending an email to studentunions@gmail.com. I will occasionally post some popular or interesting questions (and their responses). Here is my first attempt.
As of now, the commitment is to have Old Union (and I believe the dining location) open until 2am Sun-Thurs and 3am Fri-Sat. Additionally, staff and students who need to use specific areas of the building after hours will have 24-hour accessibility. I am hoping we can expand those capabilities to allow 24-hour access for all students in the Living Room and 2nd Floor, at least. It seems an uphill battle, but something worth bringing to the table. Agreed? Is [the Union] or parts of it open 24 hours? Meyer needs a makeover so bad. --Marisa
The eatery will be run by Stanford Dining and will accept points (good for undergrads, at least). Stanford Dining Executive Director Rafi Teherian (rafi@) and Associate Director Eric Montell (emontell@) seem really excited to hear student opinions. They have formed a student focus group for the new facility, which will be meeting throughout the summer, and look to have a student naming contest for the facility by the end of the year. Feel free to send any other comments or ideas to Rafi, Eric, or me.I was wondering if there are already plans for the eatery. I would like to suggest that if there is a food vendor coming in place, it will not be the people from the 750 or Ciao. They already have too many locations on campus and the food/atmosphere is not great. --Sophie
Keyless entry is still being discussed. Needless to say, certain people are going to need access to different spaces after the building is locked (see Marisa's question), so it's a matter right now of determining where keys, punch pads, and card readers are needed. I would say that card readers are clearly the best option in terms control and ease of use, but cost may be a limiting factor here. I'd be shocked if there were no card readers in the union, but equally shocked if they were on every door.I remember a while back that keyless entry systems were considered (like what they've started doing when they renovate dorms). Did this go through for any part of Old Union? --Bernard
