Information on Old Union is finally being released after a long series of meetings, decisions, and construction. I'm so excited to be sharing this information with the student body and to get students involved in making Old Union (and Tresidder) a true student union. So now to answer some quick introductory questions:
Is Old Union going to be good? What's in it? When will it open?
Yes! Old Union is going to be a fantastic student center, and the amount of new student activities space demonstrates a clear commitment by the University to improve student life on campus. There is social space, student group space, work space, hangout space, worship space, and only administrative offices that are essential to student life and activities. Check the floor plans and keep coming back for more updates. The building occupants will move in right after Graduation, with the grand opening of the building slated for September 2007.
Who are you? Why are you blogging about this?
My name is Troy Steinmetz, I'm a graduating senior, and I have been actively involved in student advocacy surrounding Old Union for almost two years now. It became clear to me and others that nothing more than basic information about Old Union was being communicated to students, and I hope improve that. After Seeing the success of the Unofficial Stanford Blog (USB), I figured this was the best way to start. I want to thank Galen from the USB for inviting me to join his network of blogs and for bringing attention to this wonderful discussion tool.
Is this an "official" blog?
In the coming weeks, you may see a lot of information on this blog, some of it set-in-stone, some of it flexible, some of it objective, some of it latent with person opinions. Whenever possible, I will try and make those distinctions. This is just as much about stimulating discussion and debate around student unions as it is informing students what's going on. I really hope you comment early and comment often.
What if I have another question? How can I get more involved in student unions?
If you have questions, idea, concerns, time to kill, email me at studentunions@gmail.com. I will do my best to respond to as many questions as possible in weekly FAQ blog posts. Note: I won't always have the answer to everything. I am just one piece of the process, here. So, I can't commit to answering your question, but I can commit to asking it. If you want regular updates about what's going on, consider joining the Project U e-list by emailing projectu-unions-join@lists.stanford.edu or just keep checking in on this blog.
