Name the new eatery! (deadline extended)

eateryflyer.jpg

Send your name ideas for the new eatery to olduniondining@gmail.com by July 19th, 12pm.

More about the space:
The location is on the ground floor of the newly renovated Old Union.
The hours of operation are still being decided but it will be open for lunch, dinner, and late night.
The menu will include:

  • breakfast served anytime

  • burgers and fries

  • hot items such as crepes, chicken tenders, sandwiches, salads

  • ice cream, pastries and desserts

  • coffee, tea and other assorted beverages

The space has mixed styles of seating: single seating at a long counter (approx. 15 seats), booths for groups of 2-6, and assorted hard and soft seating throughout the space. If you are on campus, you can see it through the windows or glass entrance from the Old Union lobby.

A few qualifiers to be considered for the name:

  1. Must be inclusive of all people in the Stanford community (non-offensive, non-biased)

  2. Must have a positive Stanford connection and possibly a story behind the idea of the name.

  3. Must be an effective food service business brand or identity. It should "fit" with the vision and use of the eatery.

  4. It cannot be a current corporate or trademarked name or in use on the campus.

  5. Must be easily communicated.

  6. BE CREATIVE!!

Some Recent Questions

I really want students to ask lots of questions. I won't have an answer for everything, but I will do my best. You can ask questions by either commenting on the posts or sending an email to studentunions@gmail.com. I will occasionally post some popular or interesting questions (and their responses). Here is my first attempt.

Is [the Union] or parts of it open 24 hours? Meyer needs a makeover so bad. --Marisa

As of now, the commitment is to have Old Union (and I believe the dining location) open until 2am Sun-Thurs and 3am Fri-Sat. Additionally, staff and students who need to use specific areas of the building after hours will have 24-hour accessibility. I am hoping we can expand those capabilities to allow 24-hour access for all students in the Living Room and 2nd Floor, at least. It seems an uphill battle, but something worth bringing to the table. Agreed?

Video Tours of Main Building (05-10-07)

So, I did a walk through the main building of Old Union today. It was my first chance to see the 2nd and 3rd Floors. It was quite fantastic, and I wanted to share it with everyone. I apologize for the poor quality of the videos: I did them on my camera phone. I found myself without a real camera, and, as I say in the video, I always believe "better now than perfect." Also, apologies for commentary you may find annoying. Just trying to do my best to orient and explain. General thoughts from me: the space was too dark (most lights off) to get a real feel for the spaces, but man are they big! Lots of new student space. And away we go:

1st Floor - Main Building
Living Room, Meeting Rooms, ASSU/SSE, Stanford Dining Retail Location

2nd Floor - Main Building
Student Groups, Meeting Rooms, OSA, Union Director

3rd Floor - Main Building
The CIRCLE, Sanctuary

Recent (mid-April) Construction Shots

Recently, I was able to get a hold of some photos of Old Union, the Nitery, and the Clubhouse in progress. Eventually, I'll upload the whole lot to Flickr and share them here, but, for now, check out a few of my favorite shots:

(1st Floor - Old Union)

The Living Room (1st Floor - Old Union)
The "Living Room" from the front view of the main building. It's kind of odd without furniture but still quite beautiful. Once we get in there, we are going to all learn to love and hate those columns. They're everywhere.

(1st Floor - Old Union)

Countertop in Progress (1st Floor - Old Union)
A massive countertop for use in the new eatery. I hear the food is the part of construction that is slated to take the longest, so it comes as no surprise that it looks not quite finished. Nevertheless, great potential.

OLD UNION IS COMING!

oufacade.jpg
Information on Old Union is finally being released after a long series of meetings, decisions, and construction. I'm so excited to be sharing this information with the student body and to get students involved in making Old Union (and Tresidder) a true student union. So now to answer some quick introductory questions:

Is Old Union going to be good? What's in it? When will it open?
Yes! Old Union is going to be a fantastic student center, and the amount of new student activities space demonstrates a clear commitment by the University to improve student life on campus. There is social space, student group space, work space, hangout space, worship space, and only administrative offices that are essential to student life and activities. Check the floor plans and keep coming back for more updates. The building occupants will move in right after Graduation, with the grand opening of the building slated for September 2007.

So what's in Old Union?

Here are some rough/basic drafts of what is going to be in Old Union. It should give you an idea of what is in the building, how the building will be used, and, if you can see the furniture plans underneath, a bit of the style.

For the sake of simplicity, I call the basement of the Clubhouse (Native American Center) and the Nitery (El Centro) part of the "first floor" of the Old Union complex. Also, it took me many an hour to "enhance them using Adobe® Photoshop® software," so please accept my non-perfect yet hopefully light-hearted quality and labels.

Just to answer THE BIG QUESTION.....the building should be functional some time in June, with the different occupants moving in over the summer (waiting until after Commencement). Expect a GRAND OPENING in September as part of (or right after) New Student Orientation.
